Social Problems Class at North Central Missouri College
Eighteen students in a Social Problems class at NCMC in Trenton, MO recently completed the Pay It Forward project as part of their coursework and as a means to become more prosocial. Their favors were done close to home, for the most part, but their effects reached Arizona, Virginia, and Kuwait. The students delivered meals to shut-ins, mowed lawns, helped an older couple move, tutored another student, helped at a basketball camp and encouraged a friend to give up drugs. One student said the project had a definite "trickle down" effect. A couple of students' favors became interconnected and overlapped. All students viewed the move, Pay It Forward, before they began the project. They were to do three acts of kindness and ask those who received them to "pay it forward" to three more people. The students were to document what happened on a poster as well as write a reflection paper on the movie and their experiences and share their projects in class presentations. Even though some were not excited at the beginning, most students finished the project with good feeling about what they had done and the impact it had on others. They learned, even in small ways, one person can make a difference in this world. Linda Franklin, Social Problems Instructor
