IT FORWARD ACTIVITY OUTLINE
Understanding Differences Charity Marathon
GOAL: To provide one local charity group/organization
with a monetary donation to be used by the charity group/organization
assistance and aid programs.
SECTION A
1. Students
are to construct a research group of no more than three students.
2. Each research
group is to thoroughly investigate and explore ONE local charity
group/organization of choice that provides aid to individuals in
need.
3. Each research
group must conduct a presentation on the group's findings to include
the following criteria:
· Name
and location of the local charity group/organization researched
· Mission
statement/purpose of the organization
· Who
does the organization specifically provide aid to?
· What
means does the organization undertake to provide aid?
· Why
is the organization's aid beneficial to those in need?
· How
does the organization's aid to those in need benefit the community
as a whole?
· Visual
Aids - Diagrams, pictures, organizational pamphlets, etc. to accompany
verbal explanation
·Summary
Sheet - 1pg. handout to the class outlining the group's findings
in relation to the research criteria
SECTION B
1. Following
group presentations, each research group will be responsible in
reviewing all the information provided on the multiple local charity
groups and organizations present throughout the community as described
within the group presentations.
2. Students
will vote for ONE local charity group/organization felt most valuable
in impacting the community by their providing of assistance to individuals
in need.
3. As a class,
the local charity group/organization that has gathered the majority
of class votes will be provided with a monetary donation with funds
raised by student participation within a class/school wide charity
marathon
4. Students
must gather local sponsors that will agree to compensate the sponsored
student with $1.00 per every ¼ mile walked, jogged, or ran
throughout the time frame and given area that the charity marathon
will operate.
5. Within 5
business days following the charity marathon students must collect
sponsor-donated funds.
6. All student-collected
donations will be merged for the total sum to be donated by the
class to the student voted local charity group/organization.

Following student
presentations, each student group will vote for the charity group/organization
that they feel is the most valuable in impacting the community by
their providing of assistance to individuals in need.
Students will
then participate in gathering local organizations for sponsorship
within the class wide walk, jog, run charity marathon as a means
for generating funds as to be donated to the local charity group/organization
that has collected the majority of the student vote.
Following the
charity marathon, participating students must collect sponsor donated
funds within 5 business days as to be merged with other student
collected donations for the total sum to be donated by the class
to the student voted local charity group/organization.

3. PREPARATION
ACTIVITIES:
Students will
learn the skills and knowledge they need in order to perform the
Pay It Forward actions through student research, student peer group
presentations, and through previously gained personal experience.
