“I want to thank you again for doing such a great job cutting the grass… The world needs young people like you; I am so proud of you and I know great things are going to happen to you in the future.”
How would you feel if someone said this to you? Well, if you don’t know, it feels magnificent. But imagine hearing that from three people! Because of my language arts project, I got to feel how good it was to help three people, like in the book Pay It Forward. The three lucky people were my mom, my baby-sitter and my grandma.
My first pay it forward idea was to baby-sit my little sister, Lauren. My mom is usually always taking care of her, and I thought she needed a break, so I asked if I could baby-sit Lauren for a day. So, when my mom had to pull weeds and go grocery shopping, I watched my baby-sister, Lauren. When I was watching Lauren, I would rather have been outside. I knew my mom really appreciated it, because she wouldn’t stop mentioning it.
My second idea was vacuuming out my baby-sitter’s car. It took me between 15 and 25 minutes. She said yesterday, she had a lawnmower in it, so it was very dirty. Afterwards, she thanked me many times. I didn’t mind helping her, because she does so much for me.
Finally, I mowed my grandparents’ lawn. My grandpa can’t walk well, so I thought they needed my help. It took me one hour. My grand-mom said the grass was pretty high before I cut it. Afterwards, she sent me an e-mail that I quoted at the beginning.
My grandma tried to give me money, but I wouldn’t accept it. I told her what I told my mom and my baby-sitter. “ Don’t pay it back, pay it forward to three other people.” I think all of these people will pay it forward, because I know they understood my purpose of doing these Pay It Forward ideas. I agree with my grandmother, because I also think the world needs more people to help others.
