Operation Care Packages!
Hello my name is Mary Ann Martin and I am a PE/Health teacher at Woodrow Wilson Middle School in Middletown CT. Our school has been involved with many projects to help the community in various ways for many years. Along with my coworker, Matthew Oszurek who also teaches health at Woodrow Wilson, we decided to find a way to help our troops fighting in Iraq. Our school has already started a project collecting money to buy phone cards for the troops to call home for the holidays. We wanted to take a step further and create care packages for the troops. The packages would include various personal items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, deodorant, lotion, candy, gum, a magazine and a letter written by our students explaining why we made these packages and thanking the troops for their efforts. We both feel this would a great gesture made by our students to help others. Many of the troops have been away from home for a long time and being able to receive care packages from children will be great gift for them. The letter from the students will remind they are admired by children everywhere and they are appreciated for their efforts.

The way we intend to perform this project is to have about 120 students from our school participate along with 6-8 staff members. We will find a CT troop over in Iraq and start creating packages for them. The students will collect all the items needed for the packages. There will be 5 classes involved and each class will bring in different items to ensure we have enough of each item for all the troops. Each student will also donate $1.00 to help pay for the individual boxes as well as larger boxes to ship the packages. The packages will be personalized with the troop’s names on them. A group of 15 students will be responsible for writing the letter that will be copied and added to each package. Another group of about 30 students will stay after school for two days and help put all the items in the packages and label each one. Once complete the teachers will bring the boxes to the Hartford National Guard for shipping to Iraq.

This is a great way for our students to help and show appreciation for all the hard work our CT troops have done.
