I guess my mom
was probably an original member of the pay it forward club, although
I wasn't aware of it. My mom died many years ago and it wasn't until
afterwards we found out about her activities. After the funeral,(my
mom and little brother were killed by a drunk driver), I went by
the place she used to work to tell her boss how much we appreciated
the special flower arrangement he sent(in the shape of a guitar
cause mom always had her guitar and a song for anyone to request)
and an old man overheard our conversation. He came over and proceeded
to tell me about all the times he would come to the bar and ask
for a drink with shaking hands and no money and my mom would always
ask if he had eaten to which he would reply that all he wanted was
a drink. She would call back to the restaraunt and order him something
to eat and tell him that if he did'nt eat he couldn't have a drink.
He said he always intended to pay her back. it wasn't until later
we found out she had been visiting the veteran's hospital for years
at Xmas and taking presents and visiting nad singing to the patients..
I guess it was no wonder that the funeral home was filled to overflowing
with people who came to say Good-bye. I have tried to follow her
example in my own life....
