My name is Maria
Carmona. I am a Director of a YMCA Youth and Teen Center In Copperas
Cove, Texas. I am also former VISTA Volunteer and a Americorps Volunteer
member. I have been volunteering since I was a child. It was always
in my heart to help others regardless of how I was raised. I always
saw good in people no matter where they came from. I have been dealt
with a bad hand in life, but that didn't stop me seeing good in
all people. A couple of months ago I was sitting in my office and
I thought how can I make a difference in one person's life. Well,
I thought about my struggles raising two kids and how I had a hard
time clothing them and taking care of their medical needs. And I
came up with this Idea of doing a clothes drive to help parents
who are having a hard time getting clothes for their kids because
they can't afford it. Well, I decided that to do just that. I put
the word out and by God it has kicked off well. Today I had a few
parents come to the teen center and get clothes for their kids and
were happy that they were able to do this. One mom has four kids
and was telling me how much of a hard time she was having taking
care of her kids. I am well informed of the resources that are out
in my committee and I gave her some places that will help her in
certain needs to help her better herself. I even told her that I
will give her daughter a free membership to the teen center for
a year. Now all she has to do it Pay It Forward. I will be taking
pictures tomorrow on this project that I started and also of a teen
parent who took over this project. She's put over 200 hours washing
ironing and sorting out clothes to make this drive happen.
We will
see how Pay It Forward goes from here.
