Book passing will put focus on teen Web site

VANCOUVER -- Books will literally be on the move among young people as Fort Vancouver Regional Library District's Young Adult Services kicks off "Read It Forward" on Monday. Five hundred copies of "Among the Hidden" by Margaret Peterson Haddix will be distributed to teenagers at library branches, middle schools and high schools to read with instructions to pass the books along, after reading them, to other teens or adults. The books' travels will be tracked on the district's teen Internet pages, where locations and comments may be posted. The address is: www.fvrl.org/teens/index.cfm.

The program was inspired by a book and movie called "Pay It Forward," and was first tried in Las Vegas. Trish Segal, young adult services coordinator, organized the district's program to increase interest in new young adult discussion groups and attract teens to the Web site. "My goal is to get 1,000 people to read the book," she said.
