Pay It Forward Meets Extreme Kindness—In Halifax, Nova Scotia

Catherine Ryan Hyde traveled to Halifax, Nova Scotia in November to meet up with Val, Chris, Brad and Erik, known as “The Kindness Crew” or “Extremekindness.com,” on their recent coast-to-coast tour of Canada.

Ms. Hyde was able to participate in one of the crews’ “Kindness Marathons.” In Halifax, this included donning white chef’s hats and handing out free cookies on the street, giving away warm hats and scarves, and the oddest kindness event of all, the “Ultimate Spa Experience.” The young men, dressed in robes and flip-flops with towels around their heads (in well below freezing temperatures) carried a couch from the hosting Citadel Halifax hotel and treated strangers on the street corner to ice cold Perrier, massages and fingernail and toenail painting.

The event was captured live on national CBC television, with Ms. Hyde interviewing on camera while receiving a shoulder massage from Kindness Crew member Val Litwin.

The Kindness Crew is planning a U.S. tour for 2003.

The movie “Pay It Forward” was part of the inspiration for the Extreme Kindness tour.
